New jail coming to Redwood City . . .

COUNTY TO HOLD COMMUNITY MEETINGS ON PLANS FOR NEW JAIL

San Mateo County residents will have a chance at two community
meetings next week to learn about the potential sites for a new county jail.
The seven most viable spots for the new jail, including in
Burlingame, San Carlos, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park, have been selected out
of a compilation of about 18 sites, San Mateo County Sheriff Greg Munks said.
He said the jail planning staff has been careful to include the
community in the process of site selection, such as going door to door of the
businesses and locations near the potential jail spots to keep nearby
residents and business owners informed.
The community meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday will also help
give the public a chance to respond to the possible jail sites, according to
Munks.
"The next step is to engage the community," Munks said. "We
recognize that building a jail is a difficult process. We're trying to be as
open and transparent as possible."
He said the need for a new jail has been well established due to
overcrowding at the Maguire Correctional Facility, where male inmates are
housed, and at the women's jail.
The Maguire facility, constructed in 1994, was meant to lodge 688
inmates but as of today housed 980, according to Munks.
The women's county jail, which was built in 1980 and designed to
house less than 90 inmates, held 120 incarcerated women today.
The new jail is expected to be a 776-bed facility that will lodge
both men and women in separate areas, Munks said.
Munks said the new jail will focus on enhancing programs for the
inmates, including re-entry programs, vocational skills and mental health
programs.
The more violent pre-trial inmates -- such as murder suspects --
will remain housed at the Maguire facility, he said.
The project costs between $130 and $140 million, all paid for by
the county, according to Munks. He said the county hopes to break ground on
the project in 2011.
Following next week's community meetings, Munks said the county
hopes to narrow down the seven most viable options to two or three. He said
he aims to present the ultimate site selection to the San Mateo County Board
of Supervisors in March 2010.
Tuesday's meeting will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the San Mateo
County Credit Union, located at 350 Convention Way in Redwood City.
Wednesday's meeting will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the San
Carlos Library, located at 610 Elm St. in San Carlos.

Mountain Lion sighting?

POSSIBLE MOUNTAIN LION SIGHTING REPORTED NEAR WOODSIDE

Authorities are warning of a possible mountain lion sighting in
Wunderlich County Park in unincorporated San Mateo County this morning.
The sighting was reported around 10:20 a.m. along the Alambique
Trail near Woodside, San Mateo County sheriff's officials said.
Anyone who encounters a mountain lion should not run from the
animal, and should not crouch or bend down, but rather try to appear larger,
and make noise.
Mountain lions are timid and typically do not seek out humans.
However, if a mountain lion attacks, wildlife officials advise fighting back.

RWC train kills pedestrian

CALTRAIN TRACKS REOPEN AFTER TRAIN KILLS PEDESTRIAN

Both directions of Caltrain tracks are open tonight after a train
fatally struck a male pedestrian in Redwood City, Caltrain spokeswoman
Christine Dunn said.
Northbound train No. 373 struck and killed a male pedestrian in
the area of Maple Street at about 6 p.m. The collision temporarily blocked
the southbound tracks and trains were single-tracked through the area. The
tracks were open in both directions at about 7:15 p.m., Dunn said.
Passengers on the train were taken to the Redwood City Caltrain
Station where they were able to board train No. 379, according to Dunn.
The collision remains under investigation.

BOMB SQUAD CALLED to RWC

BOMB SQUAD CALLED TO REMOVE POSSIBLE EXPLOSIVE DEVICE

POSSIBLE EXPLOSIVE DEVICE

A bomb squad with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office removed a
possible chemical explosive device discovered this morning in an
unincorporated area near Redwood City, sheriff's Lt. Ray Lunny said.
The object was found at 9:13 a.m. on the street near the corner of
Dumbarton and Blenheim avenues.
It appeared to be some type of bottle that seemed to be expanding,
Lunny said. It did not explode and was removed from the area shortly before
11 a.m.
The discovery prompted authorities to close streets in the area,
and the California Highway Patrol assisted in traffic control until the
object was removed, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.
The sheriff's office is investigating the incident, Lunny said.

Former Longtime Port Commissioner Dies

Longtime Port of Redwood City Commissioner Guy Smith died Sunday (July 5) after a long illness. He was 76.

Smith stepped down from the Redwood City Port Commission after nearly 21 years of service in October 2005, citing increasing challenges from Parkinson's disease, In addition to 21 years on the port commission, Smith served six years on the Redwood City Planning Commission. He served as chairman of the port commission on six separate one-year terms and as chairman of the planning commission for one year.

Prior to moving to Redwood City , Smith served as mayor of Lynwood , Calif. , where he was on the city council for four years and on the Parks and Recreation Commission for six years.

Fellow long-time Port Commission colleague Jack Castle said, “Guy was instrumental in the growth and profitability of the port during his tenure. He was very involved in the growth of the Redwood Shores community. His terms on the planning commission were during the dynamic growth of the Shores.”

During Smith’s tenure on the port commission, the port has grown by 228 percent with revenue increasing from $1.6 million to $5.3 million.

Wednesday hump day . . .

So today was my day to work at the shop at Courthouse Square. Started out fine but ended up bugging me in so many different ways. There was just something that was not feeling good for some reason. Had a lot of friends stop by to visit:

Don Horsley - he is running for County Supervisor in 2010 and has embarked on some really interesting Health Care solutions for the people out in the Half Moon Bay Area. The only clinic out there closed and instead of being proactive and trying to provide something for that community the current Supervisors including Rich Gordon who represents them said there was "nothing they could do." Thank God they have someone like Horsley that is willing to actually do some research and be proactive in providing the community he wants to represent quality Heath care in a cost efficient way. Can't wait until he is elected and can change the way things are done in our community!

Rob Sueflone - the owner of Powerhouse Gym in the Downtown stopped by to have lunch with his daughter Whitney. They are so funny together and I love to watch them together. She was really excited because she got a knitting lesson from Cheryl Monrow who works at the shop on Wednesdays and Thursday , last week and she enjoyed it. Cheryl likes mentoring the young and does so with much spirit. She sells her wears at the shop and many like the quality of her work.

I have been working on the Police Activities League Blues Festival which will be held on July 24 and 25th. Had a meeting at Angelica's and it went well. I think the Festival is going to be a huge success. A lot of my favorite people were at the meeting including Gino Gasparini. He is one of the "good guys" who does so much for our community and is one person I feel privileged and honored to be working with. The rest of the committee members are much the same and our meetings are always ones I enjoy!

Went to work out after that and then just came home and did some computer work and watched some tube. All this Michale Jackson coverage is fascinating for a Media Whore like me - but there is so much inaccurate information out there I wonder what to believe anymore.

Now it is time to make a few phone calls to end the night and get ready for a new day. Don't know why I was bugged all day? Maybe it is because of having to deal with so many other people's problems and caring so much?
